So I find myself in a bit of a limbo lately. My last book came out over two years ago and I’ve tried to promote it in various ways without being too obnoxious about it. I’ve written two more middle grade novels which I’m sending to agents whenever they open to queries (some never do, only taking referrals). Most agents say it takes anywhere from 2-6 months for them to get back to you. Some say if you haven’t heard back by X time period, to consider their answer a “no.” That’s a lot of time spent waiting.
What’s a writer to do? Please don’t say housework. Or yard work. Or any other noun that ends in -work.
What I’ve been doing is trying my hand at picture book writing (it’s so much harder than you think).
And painting. Specifically, watercolor painting.
I’ve taken one fun, inexpensive online class:https://www.youtube.com/@Andrea-Nelson-Art
I bought one beautiful, instructive book
Then, after a visit to my local Michaels for paints, paper and supplies, I dove in.
And started having fun!

This pastime has given me an even greater respect for artists and illustrators. So far, I can only attempt poor copies. But imitation is the highest form of flattery, right? And it sure beats scrolling socials while I wait!
